Jenna Pitre - "A coalition of feminist groups want to block sentencing bill inspired by Stanford rape case"

Summary: Currently, there are 25 different feminist organizations that are attempting to veto a bill pending Gov. Jerry Brown's signature to become law. The bill would enforce mandatory minimum sentences of three years upon people convicted of rape. This bill was drafted in response to the severely unjust sentence Brock Turner served after sexually assaulting a drunk young woman in an alley way back in January. He originally faced a 14 year sentence, but after a rough trial and an overly lenient judge, he was only sentenced to six months of jail, and was let out after only three due to good behavior. This bill in intended to ensure that people have to face REAL consequence for their actions. However, feminists groups around the area continue to oppose mandatory minimum sentences, claiming they are ineffective and have in some cases, only made issues worse. They think that there are better ways to handle cases such as this one.

Anlysis/Synthesis; I sort of agree with them, but not really. I do think that the sentence Brock Turner received was incredibly unjust and he faced little to no consequence for his horrific actions. The victim will forever be affected by this incident, while Turner can brush it off and go about life like it never happened. In my opinion, mandatory minimum sentences would help ensure people are rightfully charged and face the consequences they deserve. I connected this event to other anti-rape feminist movements in the 1960's.

  1. I agree with your stance on the topic. I think what happened in the Brock Turner case was completely out of line and yet another example of our unjust system and I think we need to realize our flaws and work hard to fix it. Mandatory minimum sentences seems like a good idea but I do agree with the feminist groups that they don't fit every situation. Nice topic Jenna, thanks for sharing!

  2. I believe that what happened to Brock Turner was a case of white privilege, and that he was severely unfairly treated. He should've been in jail for several more years than he did. I think that mandatory minimum sentences would just be unjust because you are innocent until proven guilty and if there is no proof you shouldn't have to do a minimum sentence.

  3. I agree with all the group of feminists and the fact that minimum sentences should help enforced a more adequate punishment to those responsible.

  4. It is really upsetting that Brock Turner got away with such little punishment for what he did, after the severe damage his victim will have to live with. Although the minimum sentence is a step in the right direction, it may end up doing more harm than good in making sure that the true culprit serves out his proper punishment.

  6. I completely agree, I don't believe it would make matters worse I think it would serve more justice so people like Brock Turner don't get lenient sentences due to "circumstances".

  8. Brock Turner is horrible person, who deserves a much longer punishment then what was given. His victim will never be the same just because he couldn't control himself. This subject makes me quite upset.
