Anna Czyzewski - Botanical Gardens Blamed for Zika Spread

Summary: Recently, Zika was found in local mosquitos in Miami Beach. When traps were tested in the area, one in The Miami Beach Botanical Gardens tested positive. Of the plants in the gardens, the bromeliad is to be blamed. Standing water is trapped in their centers, which serves as a great breeding ground for mosquitos. The gardens are currently removing all of these plants and urged owners of such plants to wash them or get rid of them.

Analysis: This article also states that the money used to fight Zika is actually money taken from other health priority funds, which is the same way that Congressmen funded other health emergencies including bird flu and the once alarming (in the U.S.) Ebola. It only shows how little America has improved in it's handling of wide spread diseases and containment of fear within the country. This only comes at a time of continual concern over diseases such as this one.

  1. NOOOO I love gardens.. Haha This does make a lot of sense though. I don't see why it's the cause of the virus but i see why it could've spread it so fast.
