Summary: On Saturday, September 10, 2016, the day before the 15th anniversary of 9/11, two Muslim women and their children were attacked in New York by a raging, hateful woman. As the two women were pushing their babies' strollers down the street, 32 year old Emirjeta Xhelili screamed horrible things at them, got in their faces and hit them. She also knocked over the baby strollers. Trying to rip the hijabs off their heads she shouted, "This is the United States of America, you're not supposed to be different from us." Thankfully, no one was seriously injured and Xhelili was arrested shortly after. Brooklyn police department describes this incident as a hate crime and charged her with assault, reckless endangerment of a child, and harassment.
Analysis: Hearing about this completely sickened me. Xhelili's comment about how no one in the U.S. is supposed to be different from each other is completely inaccurate and makes me angry. The United States is supposed to be a place where all people are equal no matter your race, religion, etc. It goes against everything the U.S. stands for when hateful people like Xhelili patronize people for the way they look and who they worship.

So true! People should not get angry at other people for an event they had nothing to do with. America is for all different people. I think the moral of this story could be hatred never helps anything.
ReplyDeleteHey Hannah, I really respected your view on this hate crime! I completely agree that the diversity that is seeded in the United States makes up the total meaning of what our country stands for. Freedom to be who we are, no matter others' judgments.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your analysis. It is terrible when people like Xhelili set a bad image on our country and inflict it's reputation of accepting people, no matter their beliefs.
