A few months ago, Seaworld released that they will no longer be breeding orcas, making the ones in their care now, the company's last generation of captive whales. Many people wonder if this decision was made because the company believes this isn't a good environment for the animals, or just because of several years of trouble with stock prices and profits. Individuals believe that these animals are in an awful habitat and shouldn't be jumping through hoops to get food. But People are also upset about this because the killer whales are a main part of Seaworld. Seaworld CEO, Joel Manby states in an interview that "It was either a Seaworld without whales, or a world without Seaworld."
This article was published in April, showing us that Seaworld just recently made this decision. Prior to reading this article, I have heard about this topic from the news and other people. I believe that this article was written to let people know that whether they like it or not, they are no longer breeding animals in order for Seaworld to succeed and for animals to be happier. I completely agree with Joel Manby's quote, no matter what people want, it's what is better is what has to happen, and I hope that people can understand that. This can relate to history because in 1970, 90 whales were stalked and herded into a net and taken to aquariums and marine parks.

I's so glad that they will no longer be breeding the orcas. Whether the reasoning is for profit or the animals benefit, is it good that they are finally stopping this.
ReplyDeleteIt is strange that such an integral part of SeaWorld, Shamu, is coming to an end. I am sure that it is for the best, and that the reinvention of SeaWorld will attract many more visitors.
ReplyDeleteI was so glad to hear about this. When I was younger I did't realize how sad the whales really were and how they were treated at SeaWorld. I think the reason so many support these parks are because they just don't know the facts.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me so happy! After watching the documentary; Blackfish I've become very anti-Seaworld. Very anti-animal in captivity anywhere to be honest. I feel that Seaworld hides and conceals the fact that they are providing a unhealthy environment for Orcas to live in. Exploiting animals shouldn't be socially acceptable, or something that we show to children as entertainment.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see that finally, Seaworld is looking past the consumerism and capitalism that surrounds their business and looking after the health and wellbeing of their animals. Orkas die much more quickly in the themepark/captivity environment than in nature due to a huge level of stress as well as the confinement of the tiny space. While educating the youth about orkas was/is beneficial, it is not worth the pain for the animal when the same can be taught from a video, etc.
