Caitlin King: Chicago's increase in homicide

Summary:
Although Chicago isn't the homicide capital in the US, it still faces many challenges with homicide. So far there have been 500 in 2016 alone. Chicago hasn't experienced this many homicides in the past two decades, and people are unsure of what to do. Many protests have popped up in recent months, but little change has occurred. Mother's now teach their children at a very young age what to do if they hear gun shots. Sometimes they have to tell their children they can't go outside today because it's too dangerous. Many second amendment supporters use Chicago as an example for their campaign, since Chicago has rather strict gun laws but a large amount of gun violence. What they don't acknowledge is the fact that Indiana and Wisconsin, two states with very loose gun laws, border Illinois. Some people will go to gun shows in these states just to bring back large amounts of weapons to sell to inner city gangs. Some are starting to say that there's little the police can do, since you can't just arrest everyone tagged with gun related violence.

Analysis:
This is a perfect article to convey our need as country for more strict gun laws nation wide. America has been a very strong candidate for guns and weapons ever since our birth as a country, but now that automatic weapons are becoming more and more mainstream, we need to adjust our laws accordingly. In the past we have accommodated movements like black's and women's rights, but now we need to protect everyones right to life by making sure it's not cut short from one of our foundational rights. This article is current and written by Amanda Wills and Sergio Hernandez. They have interviewed and photographed the people of Chicago to demonstrate how this epidemic has effected them. The authors give a since of urgency in this article by describing the rapidly increasing death rates and fear of the people of Chicago.

  2. I completely agree with what you said in your analysis. We do need to address gun laws and safety as a country. Until we do so, we automatically subjecy ourselves to more and more gun violence

  3. May people are blaming the recent publicity on police brutality, but I agree on the topic of gun laws and safety.

  4. I totally agree with you, innocent children should not have to live in fear because of unwise gun safety laws.
