This article was written by Fox 4 News on September 6th, 2016. Since they are a public news station with a lot of diverse viewers they attempt to give the information without having an obvious stance on the subject. It focuses on California Universities new 'black only' housing that will take place in the fall of 2016.

This article was written to inform the public of a recent event regarding race. People will have many different stand points on whether this is a positive or negative action. The new housing directly affects students at California University but it could spark new ideas for the future. African American students in this college requested to have separate housing from their white peers who made insensitive remarks towards their race. They were not the only college to create separate race housing. They followed the lead after Berkeley, University of Connecticut, and UC Davis. This causes a lot of controversy because a lot of people view it as reversing the progress of America. They also view this as ironic because back when segregation was at its highest black people were separated from white in many different ways such as schools, neighborhoods, and even bathrooms. Americans, especially African Americans, fought for the right to be integrated with one another and coexist. Yet it can be viewed that the 'black housing' is doing just the opposite in modern times but this time was suggested by African Americans. It could cause people to become more separated and lead away from understanding one another and appreciating each others values. Others view this as a step to show why racial comments needs to end for unity. By taking this stance it can show how crucial this is and how this problem of racial comments and view point needs to be diminished.

Prior Knowledge: The Black Lives Matter movement stimulated a lot of incidents where black people fight for their equality. I didn't know colleges started making separate housing for a particular race. My prior knowledge leads me to be understanding on why these students want separate housing to escape racial comments and "microaggressions".  On the other hand I also believe that by segregating housing it could lead to future segregations which could cause more differences and problems.

  1. I don't agree with the idea of black housing. The integration system was put in place for a reason. Historical figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Thurgood Marshall fought hard for racial integration. It is important to know how to interact with with different races. It shouldn't ever have to go back to the way it used to be.
