"Play Beautiful" is FIFA's video game franchise's slogan. Unlike the slogan, however, FIFA is playing in all ways except beautiful. I guess you could say it's...playing ugly? "Play Dirty" is better, I guess.
Here's a quick lesson, just in case you aren't one of the roughly 700 million who watch the quartennial tournament. FIFA's World Cup tournament is arguably the most watched sporting event in the world. Roughly 200 countries enter and, after a month of cheers and tears, the winning country stands victorious. The World Cup will be hosted by Qatar in 2022, following Russia in 2018.
Since it won the hosting bid in 2010, Qatar has been building its stadiums at a rapid pace. The thing is, Qatar has "employed" migrant workers who have been exploited since 2014, maybe earlier but 2014 for sure. A migrant worker named Prem speaks about losing his home after his pay was delayed 3 months.
This brings me back to when Columbus found America. He slaughtered his way through Natives to get gold, etc for Spain. Even after all of this, those who don't know about what Columbus has done, Columbus is celebrated and even has his own holiday. If you haven't seen it yet, Columbus is Qatar, the Natives are the migrant workers (ironic italization), and Spain is FIFA.
