The article that I read this week was about a recent call for more recess in a New Jersey school that seemed to be giving it a rest. While children enjoy this time everyday, local schools have been cutting back on it for awhile. Meg Baker reported that parents are now making it their mission to extend their children's recess time. They will be bringing their petition to their school board meeting next week. Many people are commenting on the necessity for this time during the children's school day including Adrienne Tallacksen who mentioned, "It's important for kids this age to be out and getting sunshine; running around. They can't be confined to desks all day."
This issue connects to the U.S constitution's first amendment which allows the freedom of speech. These parents are concerned about something in their child's life and so they are taking action by expressing their opinion. While it might not be the most severe issue to be taken care of, it is still very important for children to get their daily time to release their energy. It also connects to a time in history when people started to appreciate the value of free time and luxury more often.

Good for the parents. Way to exerciser that first amendment right.
ReplyDeleteMatthew Homsher 9th- It doesn't sound like a bad use of the first amendment at all. Children should receive more importance in the news.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree with the parents in New Jersey. Young kids should be given ample time to play and have fun outside. Not only is it important to get some exercise and to get out in the sun, but studies have also shown that play is an important part of development. I do not know how significantly reducing recess would affect development but I still think that it is an important thing to consider.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the parents. Good for them for standing up for their first amendment rights!
