A high school in New Zealand's production of a musical left two 16 year-olds in the hospital. During a performance of Sweeney Todd, the prop straight razors ended up actually slitting the throats of both teens. The razors had been filed down and covered in things to protect them, however, that did not stop them from traumatizing a large group of people.
In the U.S., there are many murders that occur all of the time - accidental and not. In fact, at any given moment there are over 30 serial killers loose in the US. Safety and violence have even been a large topic in the current presidential debates. With so much violence amid the country, an innocent highschool production of a musical would be thought to not be harmful.

... They need a better props department, this tragedy is awful. We've been taught of the dangers of show business in our theatre classes but hearing this just makes it more real.
