Layla Maynard: Gender Pay Gap

Summary: April 12 is known as Equal Pay Day. Although the gender pay gap has decreased significantly in the past fifty years, with women being paid 59% of what men were payed in 1964 but 79% of what men were paid in 2014, it is still obviously a problem. Women's race also more often than not affects their earnings. For example, an American Indian or Alaska Native woman is paid 59% of what a white male is paid as of 2016. Other aspects, including age and the state in which one lives, also tends to affect the pay of a working woman in the US.

Analysis: Equal Pay Day was created in order to raise awareness for the average pay gap between men and woman. I, however, had never heard of this until just now. I wonder if any events or programs were held to really create some sort of real impact.

  1. When looking at the progress we've made for gender equality such as voting rights for women, I want to be impressed. However, seeing that we have only made little progress over many centuries, its saddening to think that those in power who can make an official change don't believe they should.
