Summary: A plane from Somalia recently had an explosion on board the plane while they were ascending. The blast came from a laptop that had a bomb inside of it. The blast occurred inside the plane right above the wing of the plane. The blast ended up only killing one person, who was the terrorist, by him being sucked out of the plane. Officials have now acquired a video of two airport officials handing the man the laptop as he boarded. Authorities say that the man knew exactly how to position the bomb so that it had the most damage possible. The blast would've been catastrophic if it had been higher up at cruising altitude (30,000 feet) but it was only up at about 12,000 feet so the plane was able to still land safely. Those two airport officials have now been arrested and over 20 people in total have been arrested for helping.
Analysis: So many questions arise in my mind after reading this. I thought that airports specially check laptops don't they? How did the bomb go off early that it didn't cause a bunch of disaster? I'm glad that it didn't go off at 30,000 feet and only ended up injuring 2 people near him. I'm very disappointed in the airport itself for not catching that unless those corrupt officials had been running security in which case it would make perfect sense. It seems odd to me also that no terrorist organization has officially claimed responsibility for this attack. This could have been something as tragic as the attacks on 9/11 if the plane had been far enough up in altitude. It seems as though terrorists are taking advantage of all these new advances in technology such as recruiting through social media and attacks through transportation such as airplanes.

I agree, it's concerning that airport officials helped this person. I wonder if the plan for the bomb was just to scare people or actually injure people. Things like this definitely are something to be worried about but being afraid only means that they have won. -Mattie Whiler 9th period Flex
