Calling All Women to the Draft - Michaela Molden - 5th Period

During a New Hampshire conference, the topic of making women required to enroll in the Selective Services and be eligible for the draft in combatant roles. While many of the Republican competitors stated that they would support women enrolled in the Selective services, Ted Cruz stated he thought that the idea was 'nuts'. Cruz was shocked that his competitors approved of sending American daughters into direct contact with danger. Cruz went on to point out that he is a father of two girls, and the idea of the government forcibly bringing them into the military and pitting them against America's enemies bent on killing them, doesn't make any sense.
I think that Cruz does make an interesting point and I think there are many sides to the issue of the draft. Truthfully, drafting, in its nature, can never be fair to all.

Selective services came about during the Great War, otherwise known as, World War One. Young eligible men were called by the government to serve in the military for their country, mandatorily. In those days women were not allowed to participate in combatant roles in the military, and were not deemed eligible for the draft because they were unable give equal performance compared to men, and therefore they were inferior the sight of the government.

  1. I do agree with Ted Cruz's point but see how this topic could go either way. This is a very interesting topic of discussion.

  3. I don't know how i feel about females in the draft, logically it makes sense but since women are socialized differently than men it would be a different experience. I personally would do anything to not fight
