An 11-year old boy was talking to 8-year old McKayla Dyer and two other girls, one of them McKayla's 11 year-old sister, about puppies. He asked the girls to bring their dogs over, but they declined. He was in his home, so he went and grabbed a BB Gun and a 12-Gauge Shotgun. When he said he had guns and threatened them, Dyer laughed and said they weren't real, but they were. To prove it, he shot the girl just above the heart, at a downward angle, and she was pronounced dead. The boy has been found guilty of first-degree murder and is to remain in state custody until the age of 19.
Of course, this leads to issues of gun control. Yes, there is obviously something very wrong with this child, but he still had access to guns. Now children are killing other children due to lack of regulation. In a way, it is good this child was caught early on to face treatment. Maybe it is early enough to give him help, because who knows what he could've done in the future. However, the U.S. has an extensive history with gun control controversy. Who knows what the future would bring, and what kinds of weapons more kids like this one will have access to when they grow up.

ReplyDeleteThis is horrible! I feel like recently we keep seeing more and more cases of little boys somehow getting ahold of their parents' guns and somehow shooting or killing themselves or others around them. The problem isn't only in the brain of the child, it probably has to do with being around guns his entire life and having access to these guns.
Parents leaving weapons within reach of children is one of the most gross, irresponsible things I can imagine.
