A European artist named Hew Locke challenges the way Britain deals with its Imperialist past by reimagining statues of leaders, movements, and other historical changes. He takes the pride away from them, and considers the effects colonialism has had on today's society.
Art as a way to represent discomfort while making a permanent statement is really useful when it comes to over glorified history. I think seeing some power throughout history as not all good will balance the views of the past and make for a more well rounded future.
Imperialism started in Europe, and as we know resulted in the formation of New England colonies. Disintegrating the aura of glory around imperialism by revealing some of the negative aspects can be related to the censorship in Europe throughout history, but especially in times of religious turmoil.
I think it really is important that we get our world history from multiple perspectives
