This article talks about the death of an acclaimed author Harper Lee. She wrote the classic tale "To Kill a Mockingbird". This novel was an iconic representation of the racism that took place during the time in which she wrote it (1960's), and made a huge statement on the issue. Because the book still keeps a large presence in American Literature, the death of Harper Lee affected the entire nation.
To Kill a Mockingbird had a similar impact that the book Uncle Tom's Cabin had by Harriet Beecher Stowe. They both exposed parts of racism that people were reluctant to see, and brought increased attention to the issue. The amount of attention that Harper Lee's death got my both media and hearts of readers across the nation shows how powerful literature can be on complex social issues.
