Joh Oliver had a lot to say about getting rid of the penny on "Last Week Tonight." He states that pennies cost more to produce (1.8 cents) than they are actually worth. He then goes on to say that America produces more currency than we need and we hardly ever use it. He is not the only one who feels this way though. Many other people agree with Oliver and they say that the penny is not worth producing anymore. This is a huge topic that America has trying to decide on for a while, and although the penny is small, it has sparked a huge debate.
It is interesting to see how America has come to disagree on yet another topic regarding currency/money. Other examples would be the Free Silver Movement and the fight for greenbacks.
Hopefully America will come to an agreement on this soon. If the penny does disappear, it will be interesting to watch the changes it will make to our economy.

This is interesting, I haven't heard about this. I think it will be really different without the penny.
ReplyDeleteMatthew Homsher 9th- Not only would getting rid of the penny cost less, but it would also jump start our economy. That's what happened in Australia when Australians got rid of their penny.
ReplyDeleteit will probably be an even longer amount of time before anyone will come to a decision on this topic.

People would probably have so many opinions on this if it happened than they would have if no one had said anything or if we had never had a penny.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering what they're going to do with all the pennies that exists today, and how they're going to get rid of them.(Alejandra Hernandez 6th period)
ReplyDeleteI remember this issue coming up a while ago, if we got rid of it, how would we change our monetary system?
ReplyDeleteI we stopped making pennies what would happen to the ones that are already in use? I think that this is the question that is preventing the government from taking this big economic jump.
