On Saturday, there was a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in Oklahoma. The epicenter, or the root of the earthquake, was calculated to be about 17 miles northwest of Fairview, OK. No damage has been reported yet, but it is the strongest earthquake to strike Oklahoma since 2011. It occurred at a depth of 1 km. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that Oklahoma has had a drastic increase in earthquakes since 2009. Their best hypothesis is that hydraulic fracking is what is causing this increase.
In my opinion, hydraulic fracking is really taking a toll on the world. I know it is the most efficient way for retrieving oil, but in many states, not just Oklahoma, the earthquakes have greatly increased over the past few years. I think this proves that technological advances are not always perfect, and just good in general. Obviously, without technological advances we would be nowhere but for things like this, there are many disadvantages. It is also good that now a days, we have teams of scientists and volunteers that can research these disasters as well as help to recover from them.

I agree with you, technology has both advantages and disadvantages.
ReplyDeleteAfter the industrial boom in the 20s, instant gratification began to be sought more than conservation. I hope that people like Teddy Roosevelt take the reins conservation wise.
