This article talks about a gas leak near Los Angeles, and how plans to cap it are moving forward. An oil well ruptured and has been taking a long time to fix. In the meantime, over 13,000 residents were forced to move out of their homes. This gas leak has been blamed for a large variety of health issues and has been said to be the "worst environmental disaster" in the U.S. since 2010 by an environmental campaigner. This is due to the excess of methane (main component of the leaking natural gas that is a greenhouse gas) in the air that is detrimental to the environment.
This is similar to the sanitation issue in the United States that arose during the Industrial Revolution. With the increased amount of people moving into the cities (both U.S. citizens migrating from the rural areas and increased immigration from Europe and Asia), there was also an increase in crowding. With crowing came poor residential neighborhoods that were not sanitary, and this became a health hazard. The issue of sanitation arose due to the excess amount of people moving into an area at once (specifically, the city). Though the cause of the leak was not entirely the same, it still arose in a place near a big city (Los Angeles), which caused a lot of people to have to move out of their homes (due to the increased population concentration in cities, similar to what happened during the Industrial Revolution).

This is a nice comparison to the industrial revolution and all of the horrible effects that come along with it. Hopefully we can work on alternate solutions!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds awful. This could really hurt our environment.

ReplyDeleteWe can build buildings that touch the sky, we can put men on the moon, but we can't get natural gas, oil and other chemicals under control so that the environment and people are safe?
Good synthesis, the topic causes pause for thought.

ReplyDeleteThis sounds awful for the environment.
I hope that in the future we will have the technology that we need to prevent environmental disasters like this.
