Adriana Hinojosa, Period 8, "AVERAGE is dead"

Giant finger pushing test-takers into bubbles

I have defined myself as "mediocre" one too many times in my lifetime. I hate to admit that I am insecure, particularly insecure about my physical self. I've always thought of myself as "normal" or "just average", nothing terrible but nothing outstanding. Upon reading this article, though, I felt empowered. What does it mean to be average? You cannot just clump all people into one stereotype or one category. We are always so amazed at how all snowflakes are original and have no copy but we fail to see that we are the same way. There is absolutely no one in the universe who is in any way like us. Over the course of this school year, I have had many breakdowns. I'm a good student but my grades make me feel mediocre. I took the SAT and upon reading my results, I again felt mediocre. There really is no such thing as "average". Whenever something is averaged, it really is inaccurate. With the example given by Todd Rose in his new book, we see just how wrong our results can be when we average something. Just because a student does not have a 4.0 GPA, does not mean they can be defined as an "average student". There is no such thing. Each student has something that the other doesn't. Many of us, high schoolers, are victims of being defined by numbers that are averages of the grades we've made or the classes we've taken. It's absurd. Todd Rose teaches educational neuroscience at the Harvard Graduate School  of Education and he graduated high school with straight D's on his report card. This goes to show that behind terrible school grades can sometimes be a brilliant person but will always be a unique person who has a lot to offer to the world. I really encourage all of you to read the link below so that you may feel empowered and be truly happy for being YOUUUUU!
