Within the last 9 years, there have been investigations surrounding tennis players purposefully losing to win bet money. Investigations go back to 2007, but are only now starting to ban players from professional tennis for the rest of their lives.
I think this is pretty dumb of the players. I don't know all the details of the investigation, but I think it's pretty obvious something fishy is going on if many top players are consecutively losing without remorse.
This scandal reminds me of the political bosses during the gilded age because political bosses used people for votes, just as wealthy people are bribing tennis players to lose so that they can win bets.

That's so dumb, if you're playing tennis or any sport play it because you love it not for bet money. -Mattie Whisler 9th period Flex
ReplyDeleteIt surprises me that this is just now being looked at as an issue. If these skilled players are losing repeatedly, you would think someone would think something of it and take it upon themselves to invest the situation.

This really is a dumb concept. I'm glad they're starting to put consequences into place.

It does not make sense to me that these players would ruin their reputation just to make a little extra money. -Claudia Anthony
