Summary: In Jackson, Mississippi people are rallying for and against the removal of the confederate emblem on the corner of the state flag. Supporters of the flag say that it's not about the racism but the rebellion. Also many of the supporters were also advocating against same-sex marriage, abortion, and President Obama's recent statements about guns. Meanwhile advocates for the removal say that this is the "hospitality state" and that the flag doesn't represent that because of the history of violent racism against blacks, asians, and latinos.
Analysis: This situation has two definite sides that can be argued. With one side saying that the rebellion against what they thought was right, not saying what they did was right, but to just signify the strength of the state. But the other side argues that this is a major symbol racism and we need to get rid of it to catch up to the times, because no one else is doing this.

The confederate flag isn't technically even an american flag because it's from the south. And the south seceded so they technically wouldn't be Americans. So hiding behind patriotism isn't a valid argument.

ReplyDeleteI know a guy who says the flag is "not about racism, but my southern harritage' the southern harritage consists of owning slaves, idiot
The flag is offensive and I can see how others might see it as a kind of "remember our history" but it represents a bad time in American history and I feel like it should be left in the past all together.
ReplyDeleteThis is a touchy subject because although it is something from our country's history that shouldn't be ignored it is not necessarily something to be celebrated either.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Leah. History can't just be forgotten, and it is unfair to try and cover up the faults. But the flag doesn't just stand for one thing either, it stands for rebellion AND the preservation of slavery. To excuse it's presence by denying a major cause of the civil war is very one-sided.
