"'UFO' over LA on Saturday night revealed to be Trident missile launched by US Navy" -Leah Messinger (period 1)

On Saturday night, a huge beam of light came into view in the Los Angeles night sky which startled thousands of people in the area. Many videos and pictures, of what was thought to be a UFO, were posted on social media making everyone very curious and skeptical of what it could really be. The National Weather Service in Hanford, California had even been contacted numerous times by concerned citizens of the area. The light could be seen as far out as Arizona and was finally confirmed by the Orange County sheriff's office twitter page that the mysterious light had come from a missile launched as part of a naval test fire. In a statement released by the U.S Navy, Commander Ryan Perry said ,"The tests were part of a scheduled, on-going system evaluation test." These tests are often not announced and information is classified. Many statements were posted about what the Trident 2 looked like. Some described it as "a huge bell-shaped cloud" and some others say that it was "a suspicious orange looking light moving fast". Either way, the confirmation that the supposed UFO was simply a test by the navy soothed many anxious viewers.
It is crazy how fast news like this spreads these days. I remember seeing theses very images and videos on twitter Saturday night while this was going on and being very confused myself. Social media is an amazing outlet to get news spread quickly; however, it was necessary in startling many Americans who were not there. People jump to conclusions very quickly just like people did in early history. Every natural disaster or horrible accident was quickly assumed to be because you have done something to upset God. This, although very different, is a similar situation because people are quick to assume since it is not a plane or a familiar looking object it must be a UFO.

  1. I saw a picture of the UFO, and I have never seen anything like it before. It doesn't look like a missile at all, which makes sense for all of the commotion about it. I'm glad I was able to hear about it so fast though, because let's say this "UFO" was actually a threat to me. I would know about it as soon as everyone else did, and would be able to take the necessary precautions as soon as possible. -Sophie Kurzius (8)

  2. Its funny after reading this article I went straight to Youtube and looked up the video, although it was only a missle, seeing this would have been terrifying, especially not knowing what it was at the time.
