Should We Segregate Boys and Girls in School Alexis Williams
Recently in Wood ounty West Virginia thee Wood County Board of Education has decided to abandon eperting boys and girls into single sex classes.for 2 school years after a parent said that this "was a form of sex descrimination against girls". This started a big dispute between administrationa nd parents trying to decide if single sex classes were better for the kids education. Back in the day same sex school and colleges were the norm but now pepole are caling them historical anarchisms. But based on facts and studies segregation of sexes could be doing more harm than good in our schools.
This particular story reminds me about the court case Brown V. The Board of Education when the Supreme Court ruled that schools could intergrate. This sparked a lot of tension because lots of parents worried for their kids thinking that African American chdren would distract their kids in class or even that having African Amerians there would bring down the schools value. Back then schools were segregated which meant white people went to the white schools and black people went to the black schools. After theschools started segregating there was a big debate about how schools should stay segregated or if they shpuld intergrate.

I have tried to think of a reason that schools seperate genders, but I can't come up with a true justification. I guess that it is justified by saying that each gender would be "distracted" by the others, which seems a bit Stone Age for 2015.

ReplyDeleteWith all the recent social movements over the last 5 year i find it very astonishing that this was even considered. Im tired of gender being the focus of all issues these days.
I really don't understand how someone would even consider this in today's time. I think this is crazy because how you can say that just because someone is a girl, they will be distracted by guys. What if she likes girls and even more girls would be distracting?

ReplyDeleteI dont really see how this would enhance learning. Maybe unless they can prove boys and girls learn differently? But overall, I think this prevents kids from learning certain social skills

If people are passionate about having same-sex classrooms, that's fine by me- my mom teaches at an all girls school, and there are studies that show improvement in testing scores, grade averages, etc. in classroom settings that are same sex versus co-ed. However, I don't think a co-ed school should divide by sex. Transgender and non binary teens would probably face a lot of pressure and maybe even feel outcast.
