The U.S. will be sending special forces to aid Syrian anti-government rebels in fighting the Islamic State(IS), this will be the first time U.S. troops have worked openly on the ground in Syria. A senior administrator said that this will not be changing U.S. strategy overseas but intensifying it, pushing the meaning and purpose of what is being done. Russia's foreign minister claims that America's move to be more involved risks a "proxy war", a war caused by a major power that of which does not become involved. He urges greater communication between U.S. and Russian militaries. Recently the U.S. has abandoned their training efforts in Syria and has proposed supplying equipment and arms directly to rebel leaders. Convincing the U.S. that it must do more to intervene would go against President Obama's natural instincts, don't be more involved than we need to be.
In American history, this event reminds me of America's role in World War II. Especially because of America remaining neutral for the beginning of it, just as Obama wishes to not play so much of a role that the rifts between us and our enemies becomes even deeper. The Nazis relate to the IS, because both posed and now pose a threat to the people in their countries and those around them. The U.S. government decided to give rebels the weapons and means they needed to fight. What's to stop them from rising to power just as the Al- Qaeda and other forces did? Would Obama decide then to play a larger role in Syria?

This becomes a question of can we afford it? ISIS defiantly needs to be stopped, but can Amerocan afford it, seeing as it is very expensive to send troops and supply them
ReplyDeleteIt may be expensive, but that really hasn't stopped American leaders before. While saying this I also believe that the ISIS threat to the world should be stopped as well, at any cost.
ReplyDeleteI agree, we should use our standing in the issue as a lever to help! We can't wait until someone pulls us in, but take initiative to stand up. The cost shouldn't matter when it comes to stopping groups like ISIS and saving thousands upon thousands of lives around the world.

I don't know how I feel about us getting into conflicts we might not totally understand
