Summary: A college bar named General Beauregard's in Athens, Georgia is accused of giving an offensive name to a drink they serve. An employee of General Beauregard's supposedly brought the bar's drink mixing instructions for the bartenders to a local copy shop to have it laminated. Someone (maybe a customer in the copy shop, or an employee, it's not specified) took a picture of the instructions featuring a drink called a "N*****ita", a name that seems to be a combination of the N-word and "margarita". They posted a picture of it on social media (link: http://wgcl.images.worldnow.com/images/9122056_G.jpg). One of the ingredients is watermelon, which could be a reference to the stereotype that African Americans like watermelon. The citizens of downtown Athens predict the drink is on some sort of secret menu because it's not on any menus that are handed to the public. The owner, Daniel Simmons, made it sound like this drink, if it's even named this, was named without his knowledge. Tim Denson, president of Athens for Everyone, said he does not believe his excuse. Denson said, "I'm familiar with where the picture came from, and I am 100% positive that it is valid. Also, it's not surprising. This is a Confederate themed bar. They had a Confederate flag sitting right behind me just weeks ago, until the shooting in South Carolina." No one has been convicted yet and authorities are still looking for more evidence.
Analysis: First of all, it's terrible that this bar is Confederate themed and named after the Confederate civil war general. The Confederate flag represents the group that fought FOR slavery to stay legal in the United States. It was a time of oppression and extreme hardship for African Americans, and I think it's disgusting this bar chose that time as the actual theme for their venue. With this information known, it's highly plausible the picture of the drink mixing instructions belongs to this bar. And if it does, Simmons has to be punished. Racial slurs and stereotypes seriously affect many races, genders, cultures, etc. and it's time in our day and age to put an end to discrimination.
Dante Renzulli posted this article on October 28th. It was posted 4 days ago, so new information could be out already. He has quoted both Simmons and Denson, so his article is not biased.
This event is like the minstrel shows during the Antebellum period because these shows depicted white people in blackface making fun of African Americans. This bar's offensive drink name is like blackface because both are discriminatory and used solely for the public's entertainment.
