ISLAMIC STATE EXECUTES 3,500 IN SYRIA SINCE DECLARING 'CALIPHATE' : MONITOR
by: Tristin Manus 8th period
Summary: The Islamic State group has executed more than 3,500 people in Syria, including nearly 2,000 civilians, since declaring its "caliphate" in June last year, a monitor said Sunday. Some were executed for alleged witchcraft, homosexuality and collaborating with the US-led coalition that has been bombarding IS in Syria since September 2014. The Islamic group compromises of tens of thousands of fighters and carries out abduction, mass raping, beheading, stoning, etc in the middle east. More than 250,000 people have been killed and more than four million have fled the country since the Syrian conflict erupted in 2011.

Analysis : The word "caliphate or Caliph" means successor, which designates the political leader of the Islamic community, or ummah. ISIS is attempting to establish itself as the leader of the worldwide Muslim movement, meaning the are the dictators and forcing themselves upon the Islamic community as their government. The underrepresentation of the Middle East countries and Africa is clearly apparent. We have barely heard news or ignored the news of the tragedies that go down there because supposedly tragedy is normal in those countries. We need to acknowledge their struggles just as much as we do for the western countries. For example, Paris, a few weeks ago the terrorist attacks that occurred there but also Japan, Baghdad, Lebanon, Mexico experienced tragedy but we didn't see much coverage over these countries as much as we did for Paris. These types of horrific events happen all the time in theses countries. Also terrorism has no religion nor race, do not classify the whole race into one category, just because a small percentage of the race/religion are extremists doesn't give you the right to say all Muslims are terrorist.
