On Saturday, a dead comet shaped suspiciously like a Skull flew by the Earth just in time to see Halloween. It flew just past the moon enough where it didn't cause damage to the Earth and it's orbit. NASA observed it from Hawai'i and Slooh from the Canary Islands. Scientists have determined if the comet had hit Earth it would have made a 6 mile wide crater, it's speed would be 126000 km/h, and if not a dead comet, then it is an asteroid. Scientists were very excited about this because they got high resolution pictures and records of it since it passed so close.
This is a pretty nerdy thing to get excited about, but I thought it was pretty cool because it was so perfectly timed and scientists got good proof of it, not like the man on the moon or other stuff. This shows how far we have come from the 60's when the US first lauched a man up to the moon and everything was crap quality. If we had taken a picture of this Calavera-shaped asteroid in the 60's we wouldn't have been able to tell the speed acurately, whether it was a comet or asteroid, and we wouldn't even have known what it was really shaped like! We would have missed the most exciting part of all of this! We have come so far in the past 100 years it's crazy.
The dead comet (or asteroid) couldn't of had better timing! Our scientist have developed quite a lot in the past few years and this amazing coincidence makes it even better! Madeline Jones 4th Period
