There has been an increase in the promotion of purchasing generic medicines instead of name brand medicines. Generic medications are easier to afford and patients are more likely to get the medicine they need. Some physicians even stated that it improves the desire to take what they need and improve the health outcomes. Certain generic drugs have everything brand name ones have and can save over $1.4 billion dollars. Some patients don't even tell their doctors they can't afford "brand name prescriptions" and not taking it causes major health problems. Native Americans had their own medicines they made from herds and plants they grew or found. They felt their medicines were good for them because they created them, knew what was in it, and knew the effects from taking it. When the Europeans came to the new world with their new diseases they had their own foreign medicines and treatments to cure their European sickness. After the Native Americans were exposed to these foreign diseases and learned that not all of their native treatments could heal them, they started using some of the European medicines to save themselves.
Expensive doesn't always mean better and that has been proven by doctors. This is important because it lets people know they can play a bigger part in their health by speaking to their doctor and doing more research on the medicines available to them. Generic medicine doesn't always mean the cheap stuff that doesn't help you get better. Sometimes we have to take a different medicine to help us get better like the Native Americans did.

interesting synthesis, the healthcare system is very corrupt and the discrepancy between brand name and generic costs proves this
ReplyDeleteI think that more people should be aware of the generic brand option because not being able to afford name brands should not impact a person's ability to get the treatment they require. The more this is talked about, the more people will know about it, and the more people will get medicine.
