"Cup Controversy" Julia Plummer pd 1

TIME Magazine article here

This holiday season, Starbucks introduced their classic red holiday cup, and Christians are mad because it no longer features symbols of Christmas. On social media, it's being said that Starbucks is "against Christmas" or are trying to ruin Christmas, or things of the sort, but why should such a huge franchise like Starbucks cater to only one religion? By putting Christian symbols on their cups they are endorsing only one holiday and excluding so many people. And besides, the CEO of Starbucks is Jewish.

When people complain that there is a "war on Christmas," how do they not see the larger "war" on any other non-Christian religion? If anybody tried to put a picture of a menorah or a Star of David on a blue and white cup, there would be an explosion of outrage from millions of Americans, yet when Starbucks used to put christmas treed and sleighs on their cups, nobody said a word.

This is because of the deep rooted Christian influence in our country, since it was first colonized. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but people need to realize that America isn't just a Christian place anymore, there are so many other cultures in this society that need to be recognized and represented, and just because Starbucks changes its cup design to not have Christian symbols doesn't mean people hate Christmas. And besides, it's just a cup.

  1. I didn't even know that it used to have "Merry Christmas" on the cups so it's not like it had such a big impact on people. Like it or not, Christmas has become in a way a secular holiday and means something different to the general population than it's intended meaning.

  2. Ugh that's so annoying. I'm a Christian myself, but I honestly get so annoyed so often with other Christians because they make a big deal about everything. I totally side with Starbucks on this one and I think those Christians need to take a chill pill.
