On Monday, Gov. Chris Christie vetoed a bill that would have guaranteed two weeks of early voting, and would have automatically registered citizens of New Jersey to vote when they got their driver's license or state ID. In 2014, only 30.4% of eligible voters in New Jersey were registered to vote. Many voting rights groups are criticizing Christie's decision, claiming that this act would have made voting more "flexible and convenient." These groups think that lawmakers need to make it easier for American's to vote.
I believe that America would benefit from automatic registration, because then the members of the government would better represent the population. Jim Crow laws in the late 1800s to the early 1900s, such as poll taxes or literacy tests, were aimed at keeping blacks from voting. America could not successfully be a democracy until everyone who had to follows laws made by the government was able to vote people into government positions. I think that this is a similar situation, because without the votes of 70% of New Jersey citizens, the ability of this country to be a democracy is limited.
