New Delhi bans Uber after woman says driver raped her : Vivie Behrens (Period 6, Week 5)

      Uber, a service that provides quick, convenient taxi services to people across the globe, was banned from the Indian city of New Delhi after an Uber driver was accused of raping a passenger. The suspect, Shiv Kumar Yadav, was registered as an Uber driver but he had false background information published and had previously been accused in a rape case in 2012. The victim fell asleep in the car and woke up in a deserted area when she was assaulted. The Uber chief executive Travis Kalanick responded to this act by asserting that the company would strengthen their background checks and security services to ensure that no more events like these happened again. In 2012, New Delhi started a campaign against sexual assaults towards women after a series of gang rape scenarios.
     It is disturbing to see that a universal company such as Uber has such a weak system of security. People trust that Uber drivers are upstanding people that would not put anyone in harm; however, this weak security system could eventually lead to more cases such as these. These incidents have inspired people (specifically in New Delhi) to launch campaigns that assist women that have endured sexual assault. These reforms, like the reforms which sparked after the Second Great Awakening, show the people taking action to defend their fellow humans from corruption and immorality, which is truly inspirational.
