The Native American Navajo tribe won its bid on Monday to buy back several sacred masks that were to be sold at a contested auction of tribal artifacts in Paris that all together netted over a million dollars.
The objects for sale at the Drouot auction house included things such as; religious masks with colored in pigment, that are believed to have been used in many Navajo healing ceremonies. The sale — which totaled 929,000 euros ($1.12 million) — also included dozens of Hopi Kachina dolls and several striking Pueblo masks embellished with horse hair, bone and feathers, thought to be from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

When the Romans sacked Jerusalem in AD 70, they took temple treasures with them. Legend has it that religious articles from the Temple, including the Menorah, were among them. An aide to the rabbi said the Vatican was not likely to permit a search. The Vatican will allow the rabbis to view rare Jewish manuscripts in its possession. They said that if the rabbis were to come across "other objects", they would be happy to bring them home.-- These two incidents relate because they are bother societies that have been torn apart speaking out about articles that are precious to them.
