The US senate came out with a very damning report on the CIA during the George W. Bush administration. The program referenced was authorized by Bush days after the attacks on 9/11. In the report it detail acts of torture acted out by the US government as a way of interogation. Even the head of the CIA called some of the techniques detailed in the report abhorrent. He also claimed that there was ongoing reforms in the CIA to ensure techniques like that are not used. One problem people seem to have with this is that the Senate claims the torture was ineffective and that the CIA lied to them about it, however the director of the CIA denies this charge.
Torture in the united states is always a big deal due to the amendment in our constitution prohibiting cruel and unusual punishment. The US government by preforming acts of torture is in direct violation of the laws that they created. They shouldn't be able to get away with things like that but who is going to punish them if the government approves this overt violation of its basic values.
