Ban on Religious Profiling by Federal Law Enforcement - Veronica Nichols

The justice department announced Monday that there will be a ban on profiling based on religion, national origin, sexual orientation, and gender identity. This ban will bar law enforcement from using these characteristics to make routine or spontaneous law enforcement decisions like traffic stops. The older rules regarding these only barred stops based on ethnicity. Holder the attorney general responsible for the law said,  "Profiling by law enforcement is not only wrong, it is profoundly misguided and ineffective, because it wastes precious resources and undermines the public trust, particularly in light of certain recent incidents we've seen at the local level — and the widespread concerns about trust in the criminal justice process which so many have raised throughout the nation — it's imperative that we take every possible action to institute strong and sound policing practices." These new laws will hopefully help the intense amount of profiling going on by police in the US. Although there were laws before, the public spotlight is now on issues such as these and maybe they will be listened to. This relates to US history because in the past people of different religious backgrounds were persecuted, for example the Catholic people in the US colonies. They obviously weren't being persecuted by the police like today but they were looked down on by the other colonists.
