ISIS, a prevalent terrorist organization rising in the Middle East, released pamphlets last Friday regarding the treatment of female slaves. This group has released information permitting "masters" to have sexual relations with their female slaves, including prepubescent girls. Additionally, ISIS has perpetuated that these women can be bought, sold, and/or given as gifts because they should be solely regarded as property. ISIS has justified this treatment by exclaiming that this behavior is permitted in the Sharia law (a strictly abided Muslim doctrine); however, nearly all Muslim scholars have explained that this law has been tainted and manipulated to fit ISIS's extreme, inhumane agenda. ISIS, supposedly defending God's name, says that women can be captured if they are "nonbelievers" and permit physical abuse even though these actions would be scorned upon in Muslim culture.
ISIS's treatment of women as slaves is similar to how the American southerners treated African Americans before the Civil War because they both claimed that it is necessary that slaves are mistreated to instill good behavior. Both groups sexually abused, physically maimed, and emotionally scarred their captives. It is terribly inhumane to accept this treatment and it is shameful that this sort of behavior is still occurring around the world today. Additionally, it is unfortunate to see ISIS, a group that affiliates itself with religion, promote this inhumane behavior; it causes people around the world to associate Islam with negative connotations which leads to the perpetuation of false stereotyping and misinformed members of society.

Situations like these make it hard to believe that women just like us, but in other countries, are denied their basic rights as a person.
