President Obama came out this morning and told the public that he believed the protests over the recent decision not to indict the officers responsible for the killing of Michael Brown and Eric Garner are necessary steps for the citizens of the United States to take. He says as long as they are peaceful and get their message across then they are beneficial. If the people of America don't protest, then how are they going to let the people in power know what they want to do?

Analysis: Barack Obama is protecting his country's Constitutional right to assemble peacefully (1st amendment). As long as the protest are not causing any violent outbreaks and the people are peaceful, Obama doesn't know why they are such a big deal. If the people never had the chance to express their opinions of decisions that the people made, we would be in a completely different United States than you're reading this in right now. The government would have complete and final say and no matter what you believe personally, even if the majority of people believe it too.
The FIrst Amendment is arguably one of our most important Rights guaranteed to us, including the right to peaceably assemble.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this amendment is very necessary, but the way many of these people are executing this protest is harmful. It's great that Obama is addressing this, because someone needs to calm the people. If all they get across is aggression and violence, no one will want to hear what they have to say.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that Obama is talking about this and not just pretending it's not happening. While I completely support protests, I think all of the violence and destruction is going too far.
