While I do believe that it is helpful to make grim situations a little less serious to ease the worries of people, there is a limit to how much joking can be made before things become insensitive. This Halloween had many instances of crossing that line. From sexy Ebola costumes to couples dressing up as Ray Rice and his wife, people are taking jokes to a new level. This story will focus mainly on the ISIS side of Halloween.
A very popular costume this year was ISIS members. Many carried around props such as guns, knives, and even fake severed heads. the costumes ranged from being detailed and accurate, to being ridiculous (Sexy ISIS girls I'm looking at you.) It can be funny for a while, but when you scroll through picture after picture of these costumes it becomes a bit annoying.
Then we take it a step further to an issue surrounding ISIS any day. Similar to the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy, people are often mistaking or prosecuting Muslims in light of their culture. A sad thing that continues to happen in these situations is people thinking that just because someone wears a hijab or Muslim garments it automatically either makes you a terrorist or a member of ISIS. The text above is a prime example of someone thinking they're being funny or cute but really offending someone.
The girl, who remains unnamed says that she was in shock after receiving the text and does not intend to reply to it. I understand that her friend most likely meant nothing by it and thought that her friend would get a laugh or two out of the request, but that is not the case. People need to understand that some of the topics they are so openly joking about are related to tragedy and the deaths of many. Domestic violence, mass death, and murder isn't something that should be joked about so freely.

This should not have happened. They took it to the next level and crossed the line here. Domestic violence is not something to joke about.
ReplyDeleteThis is very insensitive and inappropriate. How could anyone find that funny?
