One year ago, Rachid Bakhari, was jailed at the Macy's in New York a day after the Macy's Thanksgiving parade. Bakhari was returning a belt that was to small that didn't have a tag on because he took it off intending to use it. The sales clerk told him to go get and identical one with a tag on it and when he came back he was arrested for no reason. They say he was taken down to the Macy's jail cell and stayed there overnight. Bakhari is now suring Macy's for a million dollars for personal discomfort.

This article was written for the general public. Goldberg wrote this article to inform the public how Macy's can have its bad sides. When I first read this article I was kind of shock, I mean why would anyone arrest someone for trying to return a $27 dollar belt. The man was perfectly innocent and had no right to arrest him. On the other hand, a million dollars is a lot to sue. I mean I would be mad at them too, but a million dollars? That's crazy.

Do the smart thing and buy the same belt and return it at a different Macy's, better yet DON'T TAKE OFF THE TAG UNTIL YOU TRY IT ON AND SURE YOU WANT TO KEEP LIKE ANY OTHER HUMAN BEING. Stupid
ReplyDeleteWow...stupid? Really? I cannot count the number of times i have bought something and taken the tag off only to find it wasn't right for me. I never try to return it b/c I usually don't buy things worth the trip back to the store but regardless. It is a common human instinct to do what we will with an item after we purchase it because we feel it is ours. If the woman was going to compare the two belts and then decide about the money she should have done so. If she wasn't going to let him have his money back in the first place she should have said so plainly. And if she was suspicious about him stealing it she should have been straightforward with the man. Especially since I'm sure if he didn't have the tag he would've brought a receipt. Even still he was unjustly arrested. I am sure he is only suing for one million because it's Macy's and it's his big chance. But to call him stupid is like calling a slave who bought his freedom then was sold back into slavery because he took off his tag stupid. It was an unjust arrest regardless.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe they were so quick to arrest them. I understand why he may be suing for so much, because as a large company with a large multi-million dollar income (possibly multi-billion dollar income), the company would not learn from suing only $1,000. He would have to sue a large amount to where the company notices it, and decides to do things differently in the future so that they don't do it again. But also, I think the large sum for him would be a nice plus. Who wouldn't want an extra million dollars? If you don't want it, I am more than happy to take it for you.
