Byron Otis-Dollar Coin Discussion

http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/28/us/one-dollar-coins/index.html?hpt=us_t5

For some reason, it is the public's eternal and unchanging opinion that paper dollars are infinitely preferable to dollar coins. Our dollar bills are fantastic! Part of our history, our greenbacks, exist in a kind of cultural haven where they are revered and thought of as a kind of capitalist idol. However, in spite of their traditional usage, it's ridiculous that we are making the government spend 150 million extra dollars a year, just to keep the tradition of using green paper to signify value. Dollar coins are much more durable than bills, and can more easily be used in vending machines, as well as being beautiful and shiny. But the public has made its decision. Dollar coins are hardly used and brought back to the treasury more often than any other coin.  Dollar coins are not to be, along with 150 million extra dollars, our dignity, and my heart.

  1. In many other countries, such as France or Switzerland, people often prefer to use coins instead of bills when paying for smaller things. I personally prefer coins to bills and wish that dollar coins could make a comeback.
