Claire Zimmerman: Mother Hikes for Miles in Alaska to Bring Help to Plane Crash Victims

There was a plane crash in Alaska recently, carrying ten people on board. A mother and her child were on board, and the mother decided that somebody had to go get help, so she volunteered herself. She treked across miles of Alaskan landscape (snow and all) and finally reached the town of St. Mary's, population of 500, where they were able to reach them at a landfill, where the survivors managed to get to. Four people died, the rest were injured.

This is truly a heroic story. If I had crashed in the Alaskan wilderness, I probably would've been the first to go. I despise the cold, and the fact those people could survive for that long in the cold amazes me. Then, on top of that, this woman treked across the baren land to get help. I forgot to mention that the mother's child, who was five months old, was one of the ones who died. It's tragic how the mother, who probably did what she did mainly for her son, could save almost everyone except for him. My heart and prayers go out to all the passengers from this flight.

  1. Wow this woman's bravery is very inspiring. She definitely showed much courage being able to hike to and locate the nearest town. Despite the loss of her own son, she was fortunately able to save many others.

  2. What an incredible story. She must be a strong person to be able to do this. It's terrible that her son died.

  3. This is truly remarkable. It's awful that her son ended up being one of the people who died, but I doubt that that many people would've survived had she not ventured out to get help. Her trek is inspiring.
