Sam Schwall 1st period "Portland's Pot Vote Could Make It A Gateway City For Maine"

I read the article, Portland’s Pot Vote Could Make It A Gateway City For Maine, by Susan Sharon. This article explores the changing laws on marijuana in our country. Three Michigan cities have ended the penalty for possession and Portland, Maine has legalized possession up to 2.5 ounces. The relaxing of these laws has resulted in controversy over whether this was sending the wrong message to kids or whether the option of control and taxation will help to eliminate issues with the substance.

I believe that these laws will soon spread to the rest of the United States. I agree with the taxation and control side of the argument. This policy is changing and while our state may approve later than others, this change isn’t far away. I’d like to know what you think.

  1. It is a shame about these cities possessing marijuana; however they can do what they want. I know the whole state of Colorado has legalized the drug. Lets just hope that not to many teens will get in trouble although some probably will. I wonder what the reason is to their allowing of the drug to even be used.
