One in Five Milky Way Stars hosts potentially life-friendly Earths- Casey Lampert 4th Period

One out of every 5 sun-like stars has a planet that revolves around that is in a position where it could possibly have water, the base of human life. This data has found that there are potentially 10 billion worlds that are potentially habitable. The data was collected using the Kepler space telescope over a period of 34 months! This leaves many worlds to be explored and further researched to gain more understanding as to whether or not we can survive there.

I think that this is just the coolest thing ever. It's different than saying "We can live on Mars", it's evidence that if there were ever a crisis (and it was further researched) we could potentially have another planet to live on in a worst case scenario situation. That is just straight up awesome and definitely calming to know that there could potentially be a plan B!

  1. To me, it's amazing that we were even able to locate a planet like ours, rotating around different suns. Science and what has become of it has really blown my mind. Maybe in a crisis this knowledge will come to good use.

  2. Our minds can not comprehend the vastness of space. 10 billion is definitely a difficult number to put into proportion. The fact that we are just one planet out of 10 billion that can supposedly support life is even more mind blowing.

  3. I wouldn't think of it as a plan B, more like the possibility of communicating with other forms of intelligence that we would have never dreamed of. There are possibilities of so much more understanding of life itself if we could communicate with these other life forms. Spiritually intellectually and physically.

  4. If the human species manages to outlive the "lifespan" of our solar system's sun, at least there are other planets out there that could be inhabited. Who knows if we'll last that long, or come up with a form of space travel that could take us to parts of space that are that far away. Who knows, maybe someday we'll have off-world colonies. I think it's definitely possible that there's other life out there, even if it's something like bacteria.
