After a one-year hiatus, the New York City Marathonreturned Sunday with a different priority: security.
It went off without a hitch as 47,000 runners raced through five boroughs and passed cheering crowds. Last year's marathon was canceled because of damage from Superstorm Sandy.
Police were especially focused on security in part because of April's bombings at the Boston Marathon, which left three people dead and more than 260 injured.
At least 1,500 cameras were positioned along the route to help boost security.
There were baggage screenings and surveillance helicopters. Runners were screened and inspected before taking their starting positions, according to police.
ANALYSIS: I think this is great. National tragedies are never easy to bounce back from. Running a major race not a year after a horrific bombing is a pretty risky move considering all of the twisted people out there. I mean, even with all of the new cameras in the school. The main purpose of those isn't to make us mad or "invade our privacy," it's to make us safer. No school is guaranteed to be safe so when you think about it like that, I'm actually happier that we have the cameras.
I am glad to see this event still going strong after the terrible event from last year. I think it shows how Americans will always do what the love no matter what.
ReplyDeleteIt is good to see that the people can come back so strongly after such a tragic event that happened only a year ago. Although the bombing at the Boston marathon was terrible, it did result in a stronger unity of citizens who are willing to get back up and try it all again.
