On tuesday September 3rd, Matthew Cordle launched a controversial video on becauseisaidiwould.com titled 'I killed a man.' The video starts out with his face blurred and his voice disguised; as the video progresses and he realizes the severity of what he has done, his face slowly comes into focus and his voice becomes clearer.
In the video he states, “My name is Matthew Cordle and on June 22, 2013, I hit and killed Vincent Canzani. This video will act as my confession.” On this day in June he had gone bar hopping with friends and decided to drive home. After driving home on the wrong side of the highway he hit an oncoming driver who had no time to react. This driver was a NAVY veteran and a father to two daughters. He also states in his video, “When I get charged, I will plead guilty and take full responsibility for everything I’ve done to Vincent and his family,”.
He uses this video as a way to save people from the consequences of drunk driving and even states, “I beg you, and I say the word beg specifically, I’m begging you, please don’t drink and drive. Don’t make the same excuses that I did. Don’t say it’s only a few miles or you’ve only had a few beers ...
“I can’t bring Mr. Canzani back, and I can’t erase what I have done, but you can still be saved. Your victims still can be saved. So, please ...”
I personally believe that what he did was very wrong and had awful consequences. However, he went about it in the noblest way. Although this can't change history hopefully it can prevent accidents from occurring in the future.

  1. I can appreciate the way he went about addressing the situation. That still doesnt make it right. I agree with your analysis.

  2. Wow.
This story left me speechless. I am very surprised at the way that he confessed but also proud that he confessed. Their really aren't a lot of people in the world like this anymore. So, I applaud him not for the crime him commited but for his nobility.

  3. I'm glad he did confess at all. That is really...right(?) or him to do. I imagine that his conscience had eaten away at him for the few months in between when this was posted and the incident occurred. I hope that the family of Vincent Canzani is relieved at finally knowing who killed their father and husband, and can ultimately forgive him. Do people ever forgive someone who killed a person dear to them? Hopefully.

  4. I agree that what this man did was absolutely unacceptable and that confessing of his crime in no way makes what he did right. But, hopefully people will watch this video and let it sink in how bad drinking and driving really is and what the consequences of it are.

  5. Over all he deserves punishment, but that he came to admit his crime in the manner he did can be used as evidence that he still is a human being; a less severe punishment for man slaughter ought to be taken into consideration.

  6. Indeed, this is an impressive acknowledgement of one's actions. This man takes full responsibility for his actions, and does so in a way that tries to help others; that's what's important. His past can not be changed, but perhaps he can convince others to protect their future.
