Police reported that a 30-year-old man died Sunday after falling from a walkway at Candlestick Park during the San Francisco 49ers first regular season game against the Green Bay Packers. The man was said to be walking with his brother on an elevated pedestrian walkway in the stadium when he fell onto the sidewalk below him. Eye-witnesses say that he appeared to be intoxicated before his fall according to reports released in San Francisco.
The man's name has yet to be released but this incidents is among several recent deaths in large sporting arenas. Such as a Georgia man falling to from the upper level of Atlanta's Turner Field in August. Along with a Tennessee fan dying after falling 45 feet at the Georgia Dome during a college football game. And lets not forget the Texas Ranger fan that died after falling 20 feet at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, TX in 2011. All these incidents indicate to me that all sporting stadiums should take more precaution in safety for fans. Seeing as how all deaths are caused by falling 20 feet or more I feel that the arenas should possibly add more railings or even section off regions that fans should avoid while attending sporting events. Anything to keep us safe because if it happened to them it can happen to you and I.
That's so sad! I agree with your suggestion that more railings and better safety warnings should be in place for these types of stadiums. I also think that a good idea would be to have security guards or other arena/stadium personnel at the tops and bottoms of these elevated walkways/escalators/etc. to monitor the people going on them so if they see someone who is intoxicated, they could direct them to an elevator or something else that is safer.
ReplyDeleteI think it's crazy not more safety precautions have been Put in place, especially in this day and age.
ReplyDeleteYou go to any event at the American Airlines center, above that 1st section, and there are always some form of security preventing you from doing something stupid, or even just making sure that you dont walk out toward your seat and get nailed in the face by a hockey puck or something. I don't understand why ballparks and other outdoor stadiums don't take the same precautions and safety regulations as indoor stadiums, such as the AAC, the Staples center, the HP Pavilion center, or even places like Madison Square Garden or Cowboy Stadium. Seems like tyhey really need to work on safety on outdoor fields.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that they haven't already taken steps towards safer sports stadiums baffles me.. Will they just continue to let people fall to their deaths?? I mean, obviously, it is very possible since it has repeatedly happened to people in the past. I think that making the railings taller would be very beneficial. This kind of stuff is very scary. You don't have to be intoxicated to accidentally slip and fall to your death. I really hope that changes are made!!
