Laila Kearney, the author of "Record Breaking San Francisco Bridge opens after delays", speaks of the largest self-anchored bridge in the world. Located in the our very own U.S. of A., this bridge is across San Francisco Bay and is twice the size of the last record holder. It was 6 years behind schedule and 5 times over budget, this eastern section of the bridge was about $6 billion, but it opened to it's 280,000 daily commuters on Tuesday. The east section of the bridge will stretch from Yerba Buena Island to Oakland and the Western section will go from downtown San Francisco to the Island.
I think this shows amazing American ingenuity. Although it's really unfortunate we went so far over budget, which was caused by an earthquake partially knocking out a section, it still is an example of Americas advanced technology. A self-anchored bridge takes exact precision and alignment and the fact that we were able to accomplish it, and also that we are know the title-holders, makes the success that much sweeter.

How interesting! I just love bridges and arches. America is just great
ReplyDeleteI thought your analysis was well thought out and I agree with your views. It is disappointing to see we spend so much on projects like these but show we have advanced in technology. - Emily Gray , 5th period
ReplyDeleteAmazing advanced bridge technology, might help traffic a bit I suppose. Maybe instead of building a 6 billion dollar bridge we could I dunno, use that money to help fix our education system? Our maybe have the engineers who worked on this be more focused on medical science versus how do we make a super cool bridge?
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that they're building a new bridge to connect everything, but it's bad that they're so over budget. I hope that the bridge doesn't cause the city to go into too much debt and that it helps travelers reach their destinations easier!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the self anchored bridge!.....well its not so much of an Idea now. the bridge has much significance and convenience for the city, transportation wise. although it was a huge accomplishment and success, it wouldn't be to great if it had a negative affect on the city/government/economy period considering the amount of money used.
ReplyDeleteWow thats so interesting! AMerica has become more technologically advanced however it is unfortunate that we went over budget on this project ( like most projects in the US).
ReplyDeleteWow! It's cool to see how far out nature has come in such a small amount of time. It's hard to believe we are only a little over 200 years old but we've already come so far. -Jasmine Easter
ReplyDeleteTechnology has come pretty far. It's very cool that we have something like this right here in the U.S. Too bad that it exceeded the budget.
ReplyDeleteits awesome to think that we can build something so massive and it serve such a big purpose to so many people! the american dream lives on in architecture. Most projects tend to go over budget though, so its not too surprising, but 5 million... a little much. at least its open now!
