Gays and Celebrity by Imani Williams
When I clicked the link titled "Gay celebs and marriage," I didn't think that's what it said for one thing (Its late, I'm tired). I initially thought I had clicked an article that read "Celebrities and Gay Marriage". Thus I assumed that I would be reading an article about politically involved celebrities such as Oprah, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harry Belafonte, George Clooney, or even Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt and their stance on gay marriage. Instead, the "article" was nothing more than a link to a photo album of gay celebrities, each photo having no more than three sentences captioning who was in the photo and what the occasion was.
This article is an example of the incredible celebrity that Americans lend freely to wealthy people. That's all celebrities are, rich, normal people. The simplicity of this article, discloses the simple mindedness of the likings of the public. It shows that a major growing trend is to follow the growing trend of the hour. If a celebrity does something, it is likely to be copied seconds later. We see that in knock off designer clothing and accessories, popularity in "Big Name" merchandise. Just the other day I saw a person with a getup similar to that of the "catastrophic" Miley Cyrus wardrobe from her infamous MTV VMA performance, why? I'm not quite sure. Now there are articles dedicated solely to the sexual preference of such normal people. This is all a bit ridiculous.

Way to make an extremely irrelevant article relevant to the issues of our current status in the US. Next time try to find another article that is relevant to the class.
ReplyDeleteBut now that you've mentioned it. When in history do you think Americans started becoming obsessed with celebrity?

ReplyDeleteI LOVE THIS! I think it is crazy how much we idolize celebrities ESPECIALLY miss Miley Cyrus! She has seriously gone crazy! haha
ReplyDelete-Katey Guinn 5th period
Why, oh why, would someone ever want to wear what Miley wore that night?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, every time we see our favorite celeb do something crazy we all want to idolize and do the same thing. - Emily Gray, 5th period
ReplyDeleteI love this article beause it you're really digging into the point of how humans , in a certain way, dehumanize the actions and relativity of a celebrity ,seeing as we praise them.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very well written post. It's a bit humorous too. But I've been thinking a lot about why we copy celebrities. They're just people..like us. I'm sorry but I can't get starstruck over people I don't even know it's ridiculous to me.
ReplyDeleteI think it is crazy how we so easily go towards the trends of what all the famous celebrities are doing. Why can't we just be ourselves?
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with the fact that celebrities do have such a major effect on society. It's so common, it's pretty much expected.
