Neighborhood learns sign language - Maria Golici
Two-year-old Samantha Savits is deaf but loves interacting with people. She lives in a neighborhood at the far end of Islington Road in Newton, Massachusetts. Her Father, Raphael and Mother, Glenda love her super happy personality but they see her get upset when she is unable to communicate with neighbors when walking down the street. Her neighbors as well wanted to be able to communicate with her and be her friend. So, they as a group hired a sign language teacher and took classes to learn basic sign language. Their teacher, Rhys McGovern was so impressed by the love and dedication shown by the community. He goes on to say that it is remarkable because a lot of times even the parents of deaf children don't bother to learn sign language. The family is just filled with love and gratitude and their daughter is over the moon excited to be able to communicate with her new friends.
This story reminds me of a video I saw on Instagram. It was by Samsung showing a new feature added on to their phones for deaf users. Samsung decided to surprise a deaf man and this took up to a month of preparations which included leaning sign language, setting up video cameras, and setting in a script to a have a chance to interact with him. Both of these stories are very heartwarming and show the love and dedication that a community is able to show.
