It has been one year since the tragic school shooting in Parkland, Florida. The same shooting that sparked the campaign #neveragain. Mother Lori Alhadeff wrote a letter to her daughter, reminsing about their last moments spent together that morning, how she gave Alyssa a bag with, "A pair of diamond earrings to make you feel pretty, a chocolate bar to make you smile, and hair ties so you wouldn’t ask for mine." She talks about their last words together, how they both said "I love you", not knowing it was the last words they would ever say to each other.
Since then, Lori has become a member of the school board, an advocator for gun prohibition, and started a non profit organization, and signed the 'Alyssa Law' in New Jersey, which has schools install silent panic alarms.
She ends the letter with the haunting remorse of "I just want you back."
It has been one year since the Parkland shooting. Isn't that crazy? A whole yea, stolen from those 17 victims, those children. Lives claimed by the use of a gun. Alyssas mothers letter makes you think about how important each day is, how you never know when your last moments will be. In 2018, 35 people were killed in school shootings, All but eight happened in the two biggest massacres.
Advocacy for gun reform is important, but it shouldn't take statistics like these to wake up up. Gun violence has been happening in Chicago for a very long time, where guns are illegal. We have to dig deeper and figure out the root of th4e problem, or else more and more people will die. More people will suffer like Alyssas mom, who will never see her daughter again. We must never forget, and we must keep fighting.
