This article was published on January 12, 2019 by Clare Foran. On December 22, 2019, The United States government went into a semi-shutdown process. President Trump proposed a plan of receiving approximately $5 billion for
constructing a wall bordering the U.S and Mexico; however, Congress is only
willing to give approximately $1.3 billion for the costs. The Democratic party is
not signing the bill that would allow Trump to have that much money. This led to
Trump calling for a government shutdown. Due to this, 800,000 government workers
have not received payment and the president has not made an agreement with the
Democrats. There also is the possibility that President Trump will call the nation
in a “state of emergency” in order to increase tensions in this heated issue.
The Antebellum era and the lead up to the Civil war relates to this article. During this time period,
there were a lot of tensions between the new rise of political parties and their views on slavery.
The Liberty party believed in anti-slavery, Free Soil party had abolitionists,
and the Know-Nothing Party kept their ideas of nativism. It would be extremely hard to find
a compromise between these parties on the issue of slavery. With the shutdown,
there is a lot of tension in this issue on ideas about immigration, budgeting, and the lack of
pay for some American people. It has been difficult so far for the Democrats and President
Trump to come to an agreement to end this conflict.
Trump actually thinks that the longest Government shutdown in history, is a good thing.
ReplyDeleteI find this shut down extremely frustrating. It reminds me of a toddler throwing a temper tantrum when denied something they want. The worst part is that it doesn't really affect those responsible. They will be fine while those far lower down will lose their main source of income.
ReplyDeleteI do not understand how he is getting away with this. Hundreds and thousands of families are being severely affected by his actions and it's time he should actually do something about it rather than just address it.
